EDGEWATER — A 71-year-old pedestrian was killed in an accident involving a northbound CTA bus on Sheridan Road Wednesday, police said.
The multi-vehicle crash occurred at 11:12 a.m. near Sheridan Road and Balmoral Avenue, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.
A maroon Ford Focus heading northbound struck two vehicles parked in the right lane. The sedan also hit a CTA bus, which was traveling next to it in the left lane.
The No. 147 bus was hit in the collision but didn't move upon impact, said Lambrini Lukidis, a CTA spokeswoman.
Witnesses said a man was standing near one of the parked cars, possibly unloading bags, when the maroon sedan hit a car, causing it to roll over him.
Janine Perrier, who lives on the block, said she was finishing her morning coffee when she heard a loud crash below her apartment. Perrier said she looked down to see a man getting hit and "swept underneath" a car.
"I was hoping to see him moving, but he wasn't," she said. "I was hoping he would get up."
The man, whose identity hasn't been released as of Wednesday night, was pronounced dead at 11:51 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Bystanders on the scene tried to help and covered the person's body with a sheet before emergency responders arrived, Perrier said.
Four people were transported to area hospitals, said fire department spokesman Larry Langford. One person was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition. Three others were taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital in fair-to-serious condition.
Five other people on the scene refused medical attention, Langford said. The person who died was pronounced at the scene, fire and police officials said.
