CHATHAM —  Simeon Career Academy athlete Michael Flournoy was murdered by a man who thought he heard the teen make a comment to his daughter, prosecutors said Thursday.

Flournoy, 16, was visiting cousins in Burnside on April 5 when he decided to get a snack at the corner store at Dobson and 93rd streets, authorities said.

There, Flournoy encountered Kenneth Jackson, a 31-year-old man, who became enraged about something he believed Flournoy said to his daughter, who had accompanied Jackson to the corner store. Court documents did not indicate what Jackson thought was said.

Flournoy and Jackson argued, prosecutors said, and Jackson and his daughter left, but he then returned with two accomplices who have not been identified or charged.

The three punched and kicked the teen, and when he fell to the ground, one of Jackson's accomplices shot him him in the head, prosecutors said.

The three assailants sped away in a car, which was later identified by witnesses and captured on security video, prosecutors said. The car belonged to Jackson's girlfriend, prosecutors said.

Jackson allegedly admitted arguing with Flournoy and driving the co-offenders to the store knowing that one of his friends was armed with a gun, prosecutors said.

Charged with murder and mob action, Jackson was ordered held without bail at a brief court hearing Thursday.

Relatives said Michael was a sophomore at Simeon Career Academy, 8147 S. Vincennes Ave., where he got good grades, played football and wrestled. The Chatham teen was remembered as outgoing, considerate and sweet at the time of his death.
