UPTOWN — They call him the "Sauce Boss," and he's coming Tuesday to Uptown.

A Florida performer named Bill "Sauce Boss" Wharton who cooks gumbo while playing the blues is bringing his act to an Uptown homeless shelter.

The dinner and concert scheduled Tuesday at North Side Housing and Support Services' interim housing shelter, 941 W. Lawrence Ave., is a partnership between the Uptown social service agency and the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, a nonprofit organization with the goal of ending homelessness.

North Side said in a news release that Wharton "cooks authentic gumbo while simultaneously playing the blues for his audience."

"Through his nonprofit organization, Planet Gumbo, the 'Sauce Boss' donates his time to cook and perform at homeless shelters and soup kitchens," the release said. "Not only do shelters get a great meal of gumbo, they also get some joy and kinship from the musical performance provided by the Sauce Boss."

The music starts at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m.
