LINCOLN SQUARE — These are the dog days of summer in Lincoln Square.

From noon-4 p.m. Sunday, more than two dozen businesses along Lincoln Avenue between Leland and Lawrence avenues will take part in PAWS Chicago's annual Angels With Tails event — nearly double the number of 2013 participants — with cats and dogs available for adoption on premises.

According to PAWS spokeswoman Julia Poukatch, 50 animals were placed in homes during last year's event.

In addition to PAWS, several other animal shelters and rescue organizations will be stationed at various shops in the Square, either providing information about their services or featuring adoptable pets.

Senior pets (aka, "grey muzzles"), for example, can be found at Eclecticity, 4752 N. Lincoln Ave.; Potbelly Sandwich Shop, 4709 N. Lincoln Ave., is hosting Leaving Tracks, which helps place retired racing greyhounds; and Merz Apothecary, 4716 N. Lincoln Ave., will have info on Chicago English Bulldog Rescue.

General guidelines for those considering adopting via PAWS: You must be at least 21 years old, verify that your condo/apartment building allows your particular choice of pet, and have at least an hour to spend with an adoption counselor.

PAWS' adoption fees vary; costs can range up to $275 for a puppy and $100 for a kitten or young cat.
