RAVENSWOOD — Note to folks who live along Ashland Avenue: No, your house isn't supposed to rattle with each passing truck.
"We knew we had an issue," said Ald. Ameya Pawar (47th).
In the coming weeks, work will begin to repair the section of Ashland between Lawrence Avenue and Irving Park Road, starting with replacement of the 100-year-old water main that runs below the thoroughfare, followed by street resurfacing.
Because Ashland is a county road, Pawar called on Cook County Commissioners Bridget Gainer and John Fritchey for assistance.
"Gainer and Fritchey pushed hard to find resources" for new pavement, said the alderman, who added the repairs should be completed by November.
The simultaneous replacement of the water main means Chicago's Water Department will pick up the tab for a portion of the resurfacing.
In coordinating the street and water main projects, Pawar said his office hoped to "minimize disruption" for residents and motorists. He said proactive stabilization of the street was also aimed at preventing the sort of sinkhole that opened up on Montrose Avenue in 2008.
