SOUTH SHORE — A toddler was fatally struck by a CTA bus Monday afternoon in South Shore.

A little girl, about 1 and a half years old, was struck by the bus shortly after 3 p.m. in the 7700 block of South Shore Drive, police said.

The bus was traveling north on South Shore when the child, who lived on the block, darted into the street from a curb on the east side of the street, police said. The driver swerved to avoid her, but still struck the child.

The girl, who died at the scene, was taken to Comer Children's Hospital. She was identified as Cherish C. Meyers, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The driver was taken to University of Chicago Hospitals.

CTA spokesman Steve Mayberry said the child ran into traffic before being struck by the northbound No. 6 Jackson Park Express bus.

"The CTA will work closely with the Chicago police as necessary as their investigation continues," Mayberry said.
