HYDE PARK — Jeff Deutsch, a bookseller at Stanford University, has been tapped to be the next director of the Seminary Co-Op Bookstore.

Deutsch will leave his post at the Stanford Bookstore Group to take over the Hyde Park cooperative bookstore with more than 53,000 members this summer.

“Jeff has a genuine love of books, bookselling and book culture,” the co-op’s board of directors said in a Wednesday announcement of Deutsch’s appointment. “These qualities, in combination with his management experience, make him the ideal leader of the co-op in this new chapter of its history.“

Deutsch will be in Chicago on May 27 for an open house to meet co-op members and neighbors from 4-6 p.m. at the bookstore at 5751 S. Woodlawn Ave.

The co-op’s board said Deutsch is an avid reader of modern European fiction, modern American poetry and ancient philosophy. Deutsch’s wife, May Yen, is also a bookseller and will join Deutsch in Chicago with their dog, three cats and book collection.

Deutsch takes over for Jack Cella, who led the bookstore for 40 years and retired in October.
