CHICAGO — A 34-year-old man is in critical condition after he was injured trying to stop a teenager from stealing his car, police said.

About 11 a.m., a man left his car unattended and running in a BP gas station in the 5200 block of South Lake Park Avenue, authorities said. A 17-year-old boy got into the car and began driving away northbound on Lake Park Avenue, but the owner managed to grab on to the exterior of the car, police said.

The owner tried to wrestle control of the car away from the teen who then lost control of the car, said Officer Amina Greer, a police spokeswoman.

The car struck another vehicle traveling southbound on Lake Park Avenue, and the car's owner was thrown from the car and struck by a third vehicle, Greer said.

Security camera footage shows the owner of the car at a vaccuum stand. When he steps away, a male enters the screen and drives off with the car.

The owner was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. Police took the teen who attempted to steal the car into custody.
