CHICAGO — A 14-year-old girl is dead after a shooting in New City Monday afternoon — and another teen girl has been charged in the slaying, police said.
Around 4:30 p.m., two girls were involved in an altercation with a group of teenagers in the 900 block of West Garfield Boulevard when one of the teens pulled a weapon and opened fire, police said.
One of the girls — whom the morgue identified as Endia Martin of the 5300 block of South Wallace Street — was pronounced dead at Comer Children's Hospital at 5:10 p.m. Monday.
Police and media reports said Endia was 14, but the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office listed her as 16.
The shooting — which occurred down the street from Oliver Wendell Holmes Elementary School at 955 W. Garfield Blvd. — also wounded a 16-year-old girl. She was shot in her arm and taken to Saint Bernard Hospital in good condition.
A police source Tuesday morning said another 14-year-old girl has been charged with the crime, but further details were not immediately available.
There were five other shootings Monday, including:
• About 25 minutes earlier, a 24-year-old man was shot in East Garfield Park. He was shot in his left ankle around 4:05 p.m. while in the 2700 block of West Maypole Avenue in East Garfield Park. He was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition.
• Around 5:23 p.m., a girl walked into Saint Bernard Hospital in good condition after being shot in her buttocks, police said. She was standing in the 6900 block of South Green Street in Englewood when shots were fired and she felt pain in her upper right buttocks.
• Around 5:50 p.m., a 20-year-old male was shot in his upper back while in the 4200 block of West Wabansia Avenue in Hermosa. He was taken to Mount Sinai in critical condition, and the shooting was possibly gang-related, police said.
• A teenage boy was also shot in Hermosa around 6:06 p.m. The teen was shot in his buttocks in the 2400 block of South Keystone Avenue. He was in stable condition at the scene.
Four people were killed and at least 35 were wounded in shootings over the weekend.
