SOUTH SHORE — A utility worker was rescued from a South Shore manhole after losing consciousness Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.
The man was working in a manhole near 74th Street and South Coles Avenue for a utility company when an accident knocked him unconscious, said Larry Langford, Chicago Fire Department spokesman.
Firefighters responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m.. After entering the manhole they were able to secure the man and bring him to street level. He was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition with head trauma, Langford said.
