CHICAGO — From Friday through Sunday, just two people were reported wounded in shootings in the city, and police said one of them shot himself as he was being robbed.

About 11:50 p.m. on Sunday, a 16-year-old boy shot himself in East Garfield Park as he tried to defend himself from an attempted robbery, said Officer Jose Estrada, a police spokesman.

He was approached by two armed males in the 500 block of North Monticello Avenue who said they would rob him, Estrada said. The boy took out the gun in self defense and accidentally shot himself in the foot, Estrada said. The two assailants ran off afterward, and no one is in custody.

The boy was treated and released from Norwegian American Hospital, cops said.

He was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, said Estrada, who did not give out the boy's name because he is under the age of 18.

Friday evening, a 41-year-old was shot in his back in Austin.
