CHICAGO — A driver crashed into an Avondale veterinary clinic Friday night after hitting a pothole, police said.

The driver lost control of an SUV about 6:30 p.m., careening into the Animal Ark Veterinary Clinic, 3235 N. Kedzie Ave. Four women inside the car were taken to an area hospital, said Officer Michael Sullivan, a police spokesman. The women, who ranged in age from 14 to 22, were in stable condition.

One of the clinic's employees was also sent to the hospital with back pains. He was released from the hospital Friday night, said Carolina Hernandez, a receptionist at the clinic.

Hernandez felt the building shake Friday, but wasn't sure what happened until she saw smoke inside the front part of the office.

After realizing the passengers in the vehicle were stuck, Hernandez scrambled to round up the three cats which have free roam of the front of the office. The most "anti-social" of the three cats was found hiding near the crash site, she said.

Thirteen animals were taken to Heal Veterinary Clinic for safekeeping, Hernandez said.

Animal Ark Veterinary Clinic re-opened Saturday, but won't see patients until Monday, she said.
