COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A naked man went on a rampage in the home of an unsuspecting Palmer Square couple, authorities said.

Peter Kohp and Judith Sandstrom, both in their late 60s, returned from a concert at St. Vincent de Paul Church about 9:30 p.m. Saturday to find their home in utter shambles.

They found shattered glass and broken front windows, through which authorities said Jonathan Kretz had heaved their possessions in an apparent fit, Kohp said Monday. Sandstrom's many house plants were in pieces, soil scattered all over the place, and their dining room set was broken and strewn around outside.

The bed and the toilet seat from the upstairs bathroom were destroyed, Kohp said.

The 26-year-old Kretz was already under arrest.

Police were called to the 2100 block of North Humboldt Avenue about 9 p.m. Saturday, according to a police report. There, they saw Kretz, who allegedly broke the front door "in half" to get inside, naked and throwing furniture around the apartment.

When the officers tried to arrest Kretz, he hurled a few house plants at them, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said. The officers were able to dodge the house plants and quickly get Kretz in handcuffs.

A short time later, Kohp and Sandstrom, both amateur violin players and music lovers, returned from their concert, relieved they had missed the bizarre show at their home.

"If you saw our house, you would know he was not in his right mind," Kohp said. "There are small compensations though — like being alive."

Kohp said they found a pair of underwear and a single sock in their home that didn't belong to either of them.

Kretz, of the 5100 block of West Fullerton Avenue, was taken to a hospital after his arrest for observation, according to a police report.

A military veteran and the recipient of several commendations, including one for good conduct, according to his attorney, Kretz was charged with burglary, criminal damage to property and aggravated assault on a police officer.

On Monday, when he appeared in court wearing his own clothes, Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. ordered Kretz held on $100,000 bail.
