LOGAN SQUARE — National health club chain LA Fitness is looking to open a new location in the former Olympia Carpet Logan Square location, city officials have confirmed.

The California-based company, which has more than 500 locations nationwide, has not officially announced plans to open in the building at 2719 N. California Ave., but Paul Sajovec, chief of staff for Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd), confirmed LA Fitness had expressed plans to open there.

Because the site housed a commercial business before, a zoning change would not be needed. But Sajovec said LA Fitness representatives approached the alderman's office over the summer looking for help with a lease issue.

"At that point, they had no specifics about when they would be able to get started," he said.

Representatives from LA Fitness did not respond to requests for comment, but city records show several building permits have been obtained in recent months to raise the roof and renovate the exterior facade.

Sajovec said company representatives did not indicate plans for a swimming pool or other extra amenities found at some LA Fitness locations, such as squash and basketball courts.

"Usually, the model for these types of fitness facilities are pretty much flat floors with exercise equipment," he said. "Pretty basic."
