EDGEWATER — Flapjack, the pit bull mix found abandoned in subzero temperatures this month with a badly infected lip that was falling off the bone from an apparent bite wound, got facial reconstruction surgery and could be ready for adoption within a week, supporters said.
Edgewater's no-kill animal shelter Felines & Canines rescued the dog after it had been picked up by the city's Animal Care and Control agency next to a dumpster in a South Side alley.
The dog may have been a fighting dog abandoned in the cold after being injured.
"It’s insane what they did," said Kelly Thompson of the successful surgery.
Thompson said last week she worried the doctors would need to remove part of Flapjack's lip and lower jaw, which had to be cleaned of "necrotic" tissue.
Thompson said the wound might have been caused by another dog.
The about 1-year-old pup underwent surgery Monday. A veterinarian wired the dangling lip to his jaw, Thompson said, and he's been "eating like a champ" ever since.
"He’s doing so much better than we could ever have hoped for," she said. "He’ll be ready to go as soon as [the end of] next week."
