CHICAGO — Safeguard Self Storage has plans to build two facilities — in West Rogers Park and Uptown — and could begin construction as soon as March, company officials said.

The West Rogers Park vacant lot, at 6014 N. California Ave., has already been sold to Safeguard while the Uptown lot, at 5026 N. Sheridan Rd., is under contract and the sale should close soon, said Jim Goonan, Safeguard's vice president of development.

"We develop in urban, dense, infill markets, like New York, Miami and Chicago," he said when reached by phone. "And it's been since 2004 that we opened our last store" in Chicago.

Construction of the California Avenue facility, which will total 717 units and 51,775 square feet of space, could begin in March, depending on when building permits are issued, he said.

A laundromat and dry cleaners formerly occupied a building in the Uptown lot, but it has since been demolished.

Safeguard operates 66 stores nationwide, 10 of which are in Chicago, he said.
