CHICAGO — A third person has died following a fatal New Year's Day car crash in West Garfield Park.

The crash occurred about 4:40 a.m. on Jan. 1 when a 2008 Ford sedan traveling eastbound in the 4500 block of West Lake Street struck a pole, police said.

Two people were pronounced dead on the scene, while a third passenger was ejected from the car and rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

Laquita Smith, 23, of the 2700 block of West 15th Street, succumbed to her injuries Saturday. She was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 3:50 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

Holland Richardson, 29, and Jasmine Payne, 26, died on the scene on Jan. 1. Their autopsies were inconclusive, according to an investigator with the medical examiner's office.

Smith's autopsy was slated for Sunday.
