Man Shot Dead in Roseland is City's First Homicide of 2014

CHICAGO — A man was killed in a Roseland shooting Friday afternoon, one of two people shot during the day. The victim is the city's first homicide victim of 2014.

The 30-year-old man was shot in the 300 block of West 114th Street in West Roseland at 1:15 p.m. Officers found a 30-year-old man shot in the back, face, hand and buttocks. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Ronald Sawyer fo the 11000 block of South Parnell Avenue.

Sawyer was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a police spokeswoman.

He was pronounced dead there at 4:08 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

Around 10:40 a.m., a 39-year-old man walked into Rush Hospital after being shot in the leg. He told police he was shot in the 500 block of South Sacramento Avenue in East Garfield Park. He was listed in good condition, said Sedevic.
