HYDE PARK — Murray Language Academy is considering rerouting traffic to smooth out snarls around the school.

The school has asked Ald. Will Burns (4th) to approve temporarily closing the westbound lane of 54th street between Dorchester Avenue and Ridgewood Court to alleviate parent concerns about safety and congestion.

Under the proposal, the school at 5335 S. Kenwood Ave. would put out traffic cones for a half an hour before and after school to make a one-way loop past the south end of the school.

“Several schools in the area, including Bret Harte Elementary, also effectively limit traffic outside their entrance in order to create a safer and more orderly environment for drop off and pick up times,” says a letter from the school sent to parents on Monday about the proposal.

According to the school, neighbors still need to be notified and a firm date is not yet set for the new traffic pattern.
