CHICAGO — A 24-year-old woman was shot to death in a Woodlawn gas station Thursday night.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the woman's body was found in a car in the 6600 block of South Stony Island Avenue, said Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti, a police spokeswoman.

Amanda Fitch, 24, of the 4700 block of South Ellis Avenue, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 6:53 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Adrienne Housing said she was on her way to collect signatures for an election in a nearby McDonald's when she saw the shooting occur at the BP gas station across the street.

"I was coming down the street and somebody pulled up next to this car and they shot three times through the driver's window," Housing, 55, said. "It was just a dark-colored vehicle and he sped out the gas station."

Housing said all three bullets went directly through the driver's side window near the sideview mirror. She saw the victim slumped over, she said.

Housing was disturbed by the incident, but not surprised. She's recently "had to hit the dirt twice" while walking on 71st street.

"I don’t know if it's because of the police presence, I don’t know if people are just thirsty, but it's ridiculous. I have never seen a neighborhood go from sugar to [expletive] like it has and something needs to be done," Housing said.
