LINCOLN SQUARE — Lane Tech football player Drew Williams has suffered a setback in his recovery from a severe head trauma, returning to intensive care with an infection.

According to a post on the Drew Williams Recovery Facebook page, the 17-year-old, who remains in a coma, had been discharged from Advocate Christ Medical Center's trauma unit and transferred to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

"After spending several hours in his new room he was rushed to Children's Memorial Hospital because it was suspected that he developed another infection," stated the Facebook message. "He is in the intensive care unit, in isolation and under heavy supervision."

In response to a question from one of Williams' many supporters, additional information was provided regarding his condition.

"With all of the tubes and breathing devices that have been inserted into his body it opens him up to infections we would normally not have to deal with. The bottom line is that his immune system has been compromised and he is now on a round of antibiotics."

Just last Saturday, Williams' sister Ashley reported that her brother had been upgraded to "stable" and was allowed visitors.

Williams collapsed on the sidelines during an Oct. 4 game between Lane Tech and Dunbar Vocational Career Academy at Gately Stadium in Pullman.

A fund has been set up to help the Williams family cope with expenses related to Drew's recovery. More than 500 people have made donations, which are approaching $50,000.
