CHICAGO — Police officers responding to a domestic battery call in Bridgeport fatally shot a knife-wielding man early Friday, authorities said.

Police responded to the call in the 3200 block of South Halsted Street about 1:10 a.m., according to a police statement.

When officers arrived, they found a man holding two knives. He was standing over his girlfriend, whom he had apparently beaten.

When police told the man to drop the knives, he lunged toward the officers, according to the statement. One of the cops opened fire, striking the man fatally.

Felix Valdez, 44, who lived in the home where he was shot, was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:50 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

No police officers were injured, and two knives were recovered at the scene.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
