NORTH CENTER — In the tradition of David vs. Goliath, Rocky Balboa vs. Apollo Creed (Part One) and the Cubs vs. anyone, Blue Sky Bakery's pastry trainees have challenged Bang Bang Pie Shop owner Megan Miller to a pie-making showdown.

The battle of the rolling pins is the "tarts" portion of Blue Sky's Tippling & Tarts fundraiser, set for 6-9 p.m. Oct. 24 at Intuit, 756 N. Milwaukee Ave. The "tippling" half: beer from Half Acre and custom cocktail creations.

For the event, Blue Sky's staff — youth with criminal backgrounds, unstable housing situations and incomplete educations — will prepare sweet and savory tarts featuring spirits from Heaven Hill Distilleries.

Bang Bang's Miller will counter with one of her signature pastries.

The winner will be decided by popular vote among attendees, who will have the opportunity to sample all of the offerings.

Guests will have a chance not just to judge but to be judged. Teams of two will compete to create a plated dessert in 15 minutes using an array of provided ingredients.

David Tamarkin, founder/editor of Middlewest magazine and former food editor for Time Out Chicago, and Janet Fuller, DNAinfo Chicago food writer, will pick the amateur winner.

Tickets for the event are $50 per person or $95 per couple and can be purchased online.
