CHICAGO — A man was smoking pot and drinking tequila before he drove through a red light and got into the crash that left an 18-year-old woman dead Sunday, cops and prosecutors said.
Kevin P. Crawley, 19, of the 12800 block of South Justine Avenue, was charged with aggravated DUI resulting in death along with another DUI charge. He was also ticketed for disobeying a red light and driving a car without insurance, police said.
Witnesses told police that he had been smoking pot and drinking tequila shortly before he started driving, according to prosecutors.
Another witness told cops that Crawley was driving a 1999 Infiniti sedan west on 63rd Street when he blew a red light at Woodlawn Avenue, according to police.
A man driving a 2002 Nissan had a green light at the intersection, and when he went through he hit the back end of Crawley's Infiniti, which then spun out of control and hit a utility pole. The crash happened 2:26 a.m. Sunday.
Tabria Jarmon, 18, a passenger in the Infiniti, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 3:37 a.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
A 22-year-old man riding in the Infiniti was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in "stable" condition, cops said. A 19-year-old woman, another Infiniti passenger, refused medical treatment.
The 26-year-old man driving the Nissan and a 26-year-old woman in his car both refused medical attention.
Crawley was taken in "stable" condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, police said.
Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered Crawley ordered held in lieu of $250,000 bail.
