CHICAGO — The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the case of a toddler who was found unresponsive in his North Center home Sunday, authorities said.

Police were called about 8:50 a.m. to the home in the 2100 block of West Berteau Avenue, where the toddler was found unresponsive, said Officer John Mirabelli, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

Jack Schoenherr, age 2½, was pronounced dead at Swedish Covenant Hospital at 9:32 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities said there was no evidence of foul play, and Mirabelli said police are treating the case as a death investigation.

Autopsy results were pending further studies as of Tuesday morning.

DCFS is investigating the case, department spokeswoman Karen Hawkins said. The boy's sibling has been placed in the care of a relative, Hawkins said.

"I can't fathom two sweeter, more loving parents," family friend Brian Cohen said.

DCFS had no prior reports about the family, Hawkins said.
