IRVING PARK — An alleged thief was caught on a homeowner's webcam stealing bikes from a garage in Old Irving Park.

The images offer a clear picture of the alleged thief: A white/light-skinned man with a slim build and shaved head. A gold chain with a cross and a distinctive blue-and-yellow backpack are also visible via the webcam.

Fliers with the webcam photos have been posted throughout Old Irving Park. Anyone spotting a person matching the description is urged to call 911.

The Old Irving Park Association Facebook page and Yahoo email group have been active in recent weeks with reports of garage break-ins in the 4000 block of West Patterson, 3800 block of North Lowell, 3800 block of North Kildare and 3700 block of North Kedvale. Bikes have been the item most frequently reported stolen.

The Albany Park Police District did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sixteen thefts have been reported to the Chicago Stolen Bike Registry in October.

To prevent theft, experts recommend locking up bikes even when stored in a space such as a garage.  Bikes should  be registered with the Chicago Police Department to maximize the chances of recovery in case of theft.

Stolen bikes should be reported to the Police Department and the Stolen Bike Registry.
