CHICAGO — A man was beaten to death in Washington Park Saturday, an autopsy determined.

The man was found about 7:05 a.m. in the 5100 block of South Ellsworth Drive, a street that winds through the South Side park, authorities said. Police initially said he'd been shot.

On Monday, he was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as 26-year-old Allen Ross, of the 6100 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:45 a.m., according to police and medical examiners. An autopsy determined he suffered head injuries from a beating.

A homicide investigation is ongoing, police said.

Eight others were shot overnight, including one man wounded by police. An off-duty police officer also shot and killed a combative man near a Chicago Housing Authority complex.
