LINCOLN SQUARE — Finally, someone has recognized shuffleboard for what it is — a gold-medal sport.

Chicagoans ages 55 and older will have the opportunity to compete for a place on the winners' podium in 20 events during the Chicago Park District's upcoming Senior Games, scheduled for Sept. 10-26 at venues citywide.

Welles Park, 2333 W. Sunnyside Ave., will host the horseshoe and shuffleboard competitions on Sept. 11. Golf, line dancing, basketball, swimming and bowling are among the other activities taking place at various parks across the city.

The Games will kick off at 10 a.m. Sept. 10 at the 63rd Street Beach House with the lighting of a ceremonial cauldron and a fun walk for the athletes.

The Closing Ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Sept. 26 at the Columbus Park Refectory.

Participants must register in advance. Registration is available online and will remain open through Sept. 6. Cost is $25.
