DOUGLAS — L.A. Fitness announced Thursday that it signed a lease to open a new location at the Lake Meadows Shopping Center.

The 40,000-square-foot fitness center at the northeast corner of 35th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will open in the spring.

Mike Mallon, managing director of Draper and Kramer’s retail leasing arm, said the new fitness center was part of a larger plan to re-establish retail around the Lake Meadows high-rise towers.

The Douglas location will be the third South Side location for the Irvine, Calif.-based L.A. Fitness, including one in the South Loop that opened in 2007. It gained a Kenwood location in 2011 at 1301 E. 47th St. after it bought out Bally’s Total Fitness.

The Kenwood gym will move to Hyde Park this fall when the Harper Court development at 53rd Street and Lake Park Avenue opens.

The Douglas location puts L.A. Fitness in the shadow of the more than 2,000 units of the Lake Meadows apartment towers.

Owner Draper and Kramer in 2008 said it was developing a 20-year plan to demolish the buildings and redevelop the 70-acre site and add 7,000 units to the neighborhood.
