CHICAGO — A man charged with domestic battery in the fatal beating earlier this month of his Back of the Yards roommate has now been charged with first-degree murder, police said.

Alvaro Elizondo, 45, allegedly fatally beat Juan Zavala, 46, near his home near in the 4400 block of South Wolcott Avenue on the Fourth of July, police said.

Officers responded to a call of a domestic battery about 10 p.m. July 4 and found Zavala unconscious on the ground, police said.

Officers were told Elizondo had punched Zavala in the face until he was unconscious, and continued to beat him after he was knocked out, police said.

The victim's mother tried to intervene, and Elizondo allegedly pushed her down and ran, police said.

Zaval was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

Alvaro was charged two days after the attack with domestic battery and aggravated battery of a person over the age of 60, police said.

Zavala died from his injuries on July 20, and Elizondo now faces first-degree murder charges in the attack.

He was held on $500,000 bond for his previous charges.
