CHICAGO — The older brother of a 16-year-old Hyde Park Academy student originally thought to have died of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday was charged in the boy's death late Saturday, police said.
Malcolm Whitney, 16, was shot about 9:45 a.m. at home in the 7500 block of South Kingston Avenue, said Officer Daniel O'Brien, a police spokesman. But an autopsy report released Saturday classified his death as a homicide. A medical examiner's office spokesman said Whitney was accidentally shot by another person.
Michael Whitney, 19, of the 7500 block of South Kingston Avenue, was charged involuntary manslaughter of a family member and unlawful use of a weapon, police said.
Michael Whitney was allegedly playing with a handgun, and pointed it at his brother. The weapon fired, strking Malcom in the head.
He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:34 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
Michael Whitney is due to appear in bond court Sunday.
