CHICAGO — A Hyde Park Academy basketball player died after accidentally shooting himself in South Shore Friday morning, officials said.

Malcolm Whitney, 16, was shot about 9:45 a.m. at home in the 7500 block of South Kingston Avenue, said Officer Daniel O'Brien, a police spokesman.

Whitney was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:34 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The wound appeared to have been accidental and self-inflicted, said a spokesman for the medical examiner's office.

The case is being pursued as a death investigation, and police are questioning a person of interest, O'Brien said.

Two men were seen taken from the scene in handcuffs.

Whitney was identified as a sophomore guard for Hyde Park Academy's basketball team on Twitter Friday afternoon, as various members of the high school sports community expressed their condolences.

"I am saddened to have to announce the passing of one of our players today," tweeted Billy Welcome, president of Full Package Boys Basketball. "Malcolm was the epitome of a 'Full Package' student-athlete.Extraordinary leader, teammate and student. He will be missed but never forgotten."
