CHICAGO — A 9-year-old boy who was shot in what police say was a gang-related incident was released from the hospital Monday, his mother said.

"Tykeece is doing well and being released today," Tynisha Hilliard said via text Monday..

The doctors at the University of Chicago have done a "good job," she added..

Tykeece Hilliard was shot in his chest about 5:30 Wednesday evening as his family drove home from dinner in the 6700 block of South Evans Avenue.

He was taken to Comer Children's Hospital after he was shot.

Tykeece's mother disputed the narrative laid out by police, who said a man in the car — who they described as her boyfriend — was targeted for his gang ties.
