BRIDGEPORT— Hundreds of brides-to-be, friends of brides, and begrudging fiances flooded the sky-lit top floor of the Bridgeport Art Center last week to scope out what's in and what's out for spring and summer weddings.

"The traditional is really coming back to the forefront," said Cara Nava, wedding expert and co-host of the Brides, Bubbles, and Bliss event. "We're seeing higher necklines and long lace sleeves."

Nava, and her husband and co-host Scott Nava, said Hollywood's highly anticipated flick "Great Gatsby" has inspired many brides to keep it classic, in terms of color schemes for the wedding.

"A lot of pastels, beautiful colors, it's all about spring right now," said Scott, who added that rose, champagne and cherry blossom shades are all in this season.

It's not just "Gastby" that's seeping into weddings. Cake designer Elysia Root said many of her clients have been opting to go with vintage looks inspired by the mega-popular British TV series "Downton Abbey."

"Metallic is huge, we've been seeing a lot of gold. All what I characterize as bold and romantic cakes," said Root.

Although Root said most brides are still leaning toward traditional cakes, more are opting for the non-traditional sweets, like cupcake towers and a seemingly less classy dessert.

"Donuts are actually huge right now. So go fried dough!" Root said with a laugh.
