CHICAGO — A man was killed and at least 13 others were wounded in shootings across the city between Friday afternoon and Sunday night.
A fight inside what neighborhood residents called a "private bar" in the 2500 block of West Division Street left two men shot, one fatally, about 6:04 a.m. Sunday morning, said Officer John Mirabelli, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.
Andre Velasquez, 36, of the 2100 block of North Lawndale Avenue, was shot in his head at the party. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 6:35 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
The fight then spilled out onto the Division Street, where a 20-year-old man also was shot, Mirabelli said. That man walked into West Suburban Medical Center.
Joe Mapes, a 32-year-old who lives around the corner from the site of the shooting, said such violence is rare in the neighborhood.
"I heard a single pop this morning and heard a car screeching down my street," Mapes said.
About 4:30 a.m. Sunday, officers shot a man who police said brandished a shotgun during a traffic stop in the 3600 block of West Franklin Boulevard. He was taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound in his arm.
About 4 a.m. Sunday, an 18-year-old man was shot while walking with a companion in the 2000 block of West Randolph Street on the Near West Side, Mirabelli said. A male popped up from behind a garbage can and shot in the pair's direction, hitting the victim twice in his right thigh, once in his midsection and once in his buttocks.
The shooter fled, and the victim retreated south through an alley before being taken to Stroger, Mirabelli said. The victim has gang affiliations, police said.
About 3:15 a.m. Sunday, a 28-year-old man was shot in his upper leg in the 3800 block of West Huron Street in East Garfield Park. Mirabelli said the man was not cooperative when he was checked in to Stroger, where he was in stable condition.
In Irving Park, a 29-year-old man was shot in his big toe in the 3500 block of West Barry Avenue about 1 a.m. Sunday, Mirabelli said. He walked into Norwegian American Hospital in good condition.
Around the same time, a man in his 20s was shot in his buttocks in the 5400 block of West Monroe Street in Austin. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition.
In South Deering about 11:20 p.m. Saturday, a man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center after he realized he was shot in his back while in the 2100 block of East 97th Street, Mirabelli said.
Just before 2 a.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man was shot in his left side while standing in the 5900 block of South Normal Avenue in Englewood, Mirabelli said. The teen, who police said has gang ties, walked to St. Bernard Hospital. He was in stable condition.
In Little Village, two men were injured early Saturday in a drive-by shooting in the 2600 block of West 23rd Place, Mirabelli said. Someone in a dark-colored minivan opened fire about 3:15 a.m., before fleeing southbound on South Rockwell Street.
A 26-year-old man was shot in his lower right leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. A 24-year-old man was shot in his right leg, but refused medical attention. Both men have gang ties, Mirabelli said.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, in the 6700 block of South Lafayette Avenue, a 19 year-old woman was shot in her leg, said Officer Joshua Purkiss, a Police Department spokesman. She was taken to Stroger in good condition.
About 2 p.m. Friday, a 15-year-old boy was struck in his lower right leg in a drive-by shooting in the 6400 block of South Claremont Avenue, police said. The boy had been sitting on his front porch in Chicago Lawn when several passengers in a teal-colored car opened fire, Mirabelli said. The teen was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, and detectives believe the shooting was gang-related.
In Grand Crossing, an 19-year-old man was shot in his lower right side while standing in the 7500 block of South Dobson Street about 5 p.m. Friday, police said. The man was listed in stable condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center. Police said he knew his attacker, and the two had had altercations in the past.
