CHICAGO — A 1-year-old baby was found inside a stolen car minutes after the car was taken Wednesday night in Humboldt Park, police said.

The child's 20-year-old mother had left her 1999 Pontiac Grand Am running at a gas station in the 3100 block of West Chicago Avenue about 9:25 p.m., said Officer Michael Sullivan, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The mother told cops that she saw a man she knew from the neighborhood get in the car and take off with it, Sullivan said.

The car was found nearby in the 600 block of North Kedzie Avenue a few minutes later with the baby safe inside, Sullivan said. The baby was taken to Norwegian American Hospital as a precaution, Sullivan said.

Sullivan said no one was in custody, and police are investigating the theft.
