CHICAGO — Authorities suspended Red Line service for several hours early Friday morning after discovering a suspicious package on an Edgewater platform.

Police were alerted about 2:43 a.m. to an unattended black suitcase at the Thorndale Red Line stop, said Officer Michael Sullivan, a police spokesman.

Trains were suspended while the police bomb-and-arson unit investigated, Sullivan said. The suitcase's contents were ruled "non-explosive" about 4:45 a.m.

Red Line service has resumed, and the incident is not expected to impact morning commutes.
