Michelle Obama to Address Violence in Chicago Wednesday

By DNAinfo Staff on April 5, 2013 7:58pm

CHICAGO — First lady Michelle Obama will visit Chicago Wednesday to discuss violence and push for youth outreach program funding during a luncheon hosted by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, officials said.

Obama will join Emanuel and business leaders, philanthropists, community leaders and criminal justice experts at the Hilton Chicago, 720 S. Michigan Ave., to ask the business sector to raise $50 million to support youth programs, DNAinfo.com Chicago reported last month.

She will speak "from her experience as a Chicagoan and a mother" about providing young people with opportunities to achieve their full potential and grow up in safe communities, according the White House.

Obama last visited Chicago to launch her new fitness initiative, "Let's Move!" in February. Several weeks earlier, she attended the funeral for slain King College Prep student Hadiya Pendleton, who was fatally shot about a mile from the Obamas' Kenwood home.

Twelve of the 77 people murdered in Chicago since the start of 2013 were under the age of 18.
