CPS Closings: Public Meeting Set on Stewart, Stockton Closures

By Adeshina Emmanuel | March 26, 2013 10:44am

UPTOWN — Chicago Public Schools has proposed closing Graeme Stewart and Joseph Stockton elementary schools — but the Uptown community still has time to speak up about the decision.

The school district has scheduled two community meetings and one formal public hearing where public comment will be allowed regarding Stewart — which would be shuttered and have its students shifted to Joseph Brennemann Elementary School.

The meetings will also cover the closing of Stocktonwhich would be taken over by Mary E. Courtenay Elementary School in Ravenswood. Stockton students can stay at the building when it is taken over, but the teachers and support staff would have to reapply for their jobs, with no guarantees they will be allowed to stay.

For Stewart, the first community meeting is scheduled April 8, 5-7 p.m. at Amundsen High School, 5110 N. Damen Ave and the second one will be held April 11 from 5-7 p.m., also at Amundsen.

A formal public hearing for Stewart is slated April 16, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at CPS' Central Office, 125 S. Clark St.

For Stockton, the first community meeting is scheduled April 8, 7:30-9:30 p.m., at Amundsen and the second one will be held April 11 7:30-9:30 p.m., at Amundsen.

A formal public hearing for Stockton is set for April 16, 8-10 p.m., at CPS' Central Office.

People who want to speak have to sign up in advance, and will be given at least two minutes to comment about the proposed closing.
