UPTOWN — Teachers at Joseph Stockton Elementary School told DNAinfo.com Chicago Thursday that their school will merge with Mary E. Courtenay Elementary School, with Courtenay officials running the school, which will use the Stockton building.

"Courtenay will come here," one veteran teacher said. "Courtenay is in charge."

The teacher said that teachers at Stockton will be hired according to who has the most years under their belt, and based on teacher ratings, with "superior" and "excellent" teachers preferred.

A union representative said that Stockton Principal Jill Besenjak had a meeting at 6 a.m. with CPS officials, who informed her of the news and told her "to have meetings all morning long to inform staff," of what was happening, which is how teachers found out.

Stockton, with about 500 students, is on academic probation, with lower ratings than Courtenay, which has about 300 students. Both have about 30 percent special education students.

Administrators and officials were in a meeting Thursday morning at Courtenay, and the principal there was unreachable for comment, according to a school employee.
