Run, Don't Tiptoe, for Free Tulips at Kilbourn Park

By Patty Wetli | March 23, 2013 8:40am

IRVING PARK — Oh what a difference 400 years makes.

Once upon a time, tulips were treated like money by the Dutch. On Saturday, Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse will be giving the bulbs away for free.

The bulbs come courtesy of the Chicago Park District's display at Navy Pier. Choose from five available varieties:

  • Exotic Emperor (double tulip, white with green and yellow streaks)
  • Daydream (golden buds give way to orange flowers, long stems)
  • Happy Family (purplish pink/dusky rose, has multiple heads per stem)
  • Coquette (creamy white flowers)
  • Mondial (double tulip, brilliant white)

Kilbourn Park will provide burlap bags to carry your bulbs home. Bulbs should be stored in a basement or garage until the ground is soft enough for planting.

The tulip giveaway runs March 23, 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Enter through the gate in the rear of the garden at Kilbourn Park, 3501 N. Kilbourn Ave.
