ALBANY PARK — Police shot and killed an armed man Saturday following an early morning shootout in Albany Park.

Esau Castellanos-Bernal, 26, was driving east on West Wilson Avenue about 3 a.m. when he hit several parked cars and stopped in the middle of the street on the 3300 block of Wilson, said Patrick Camden, spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

Officers in the area, who first noticed Castellanos-Bernal because he was speeding, approached the car to investigate, Camden said.

As they got closer, Castellanos-Bernal opened fire. Officers dove for cover and returned fire, killing the man, Camden said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office pronounced Castellanos-Bernal dead on the scene at 4:15 a.m. He died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Two police officers were injured while diving for cover and treated at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Camden said. Neither officer was shot.

This is the second time in three days police have shot and killed an armed man.

On Thursday, officers fatally shot John Harris, 58, in an East Garfield Park apartment. Harris allegedly pointed a gun at officers responding to a disturbance about 2:15 a.m. Police opened fire, killing Harris. No officers were harmed during the incident, authorities said.
