CHICAGO — Police said two people were taken in for questioning after a known gang member was shot in the chest near a Northwest Side cemetery Tuesday afternoon.

The 28-year-old man, a known gang member, was shot in a car when shots rang out from another car about 2:40 p.m. in the 3700 block of North Narragansett Avenue in Portage Park, police said.

Ald. Tim Cullerton (38th) said police told him a group of gang members were visiting a grave at Mt. Olive Catholic Cemetery when a rival gang opened fire.

The victim walked into Our Lady of Resurrection Hospital with his wound, but was later transferred to Illinois Masonic in critical condition, police said.

Preliminary information showed the shooting was gang-related, police said. Two were being questioned after the shooting, police said.

Cullerton said gang shootings are rare in his ward.

"This is very disconcerting," he said.

Public police records indicate the street rarely sees shootings or violent crime.
