RAVENSWOOD — Volleyball is coming to Ravenswood Elementary. There's just one catch: The school doesn't have any volleyballs.

So, the school turned to DonorsChoose for help, posting this request: "Our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders would like to work together to learn volleyball fundamentals but don't have the volleyballs!"

According to the DonorsChoose site, the cost for 20 volleyballs and a ball cart is $919.54.

On Thursday, the school at 4332 N. Paulina St. announced that the DonorsChoose board of directors has pledged a 100 percent match of any donations made by Sunday. Donors should enter the code INSPIRE at checkout.

Ravenswood's sports program currently consists solely of Girls on the Run and basketball. Parents have volunteered to coach and organize the volleyball team.

The DonorsChoose request emphasized the importance of athletics for youngsters: "Our students will learn teamwork, the three P's; PRACTICE, PATIENCE, and PERSISTENCE, fair play, leadership, being a good sport, a sense of pride, socialization, and exercise."
