CHICAGO — President Barack Obama will travel to Chicago Friday after a violent month in his adopted hometown.

The White House confirmed Sunday that the president will visit the city as part of a tour discussing themes from his upcoming State of the Union speech. Obama will discuss gun violence during his appearance here, a White House official said.

The announcement came a day after first lady Michelle Obama attended the funeral of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old King College Prep student gunned down nearly two weeks ago. While speakers at the funeral thanked the first lady for her presence, some have questions why the president did not attend.

Hadiya was killed at Harsh Park, about a mile away from the Obama's Kenwood home.
