SOUTH SHORE — One man is dead and another wounded after a shooting in South Shore Thursday night, police said.

The victim, 39-year-old Tyrone Soleberry, was killed in the 2000 block of East 71st Street after shots rang out at 6:13 p.m., authorities said. Another man, 49, was shot in the leg, he said, and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

Soleberry, of the 2000 block of East 71st Street, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Witnesses on the scene said they thought it was a drive-by shooting. A dog was shot in the paw, witnesses said.

"You might as well say we're in a third-world country" because of the violence, said Lorea Peppers, who lives near the scene of the shooting.

Peppers was complaining to a police officer about the violence.

"Everybody does what they can, but people are afraid. I understand that," said Chicago Police Sgt. Thomas Barker. "I don't know what the solution is.

"The community needs to get to the point where it stands up and helps us," he said.
