PORTAGE PARK — Northwest Side residents may soon be able to indulge their craving for tacos and burritos a little closer to home.

Chipotle Mexican Grill, a national restuarant chain known for its large burritos and tacos, is interested in opening a store in the Six Corners shopping district in Portage Park, company spokesman Chris Arnold said.

However, the Denver-based company has not yet signed a lease for property in the area.

Demolition of a building at 4653 W. Irving Park Road that once housed a clothing store and a bank sparked rumors that the restaurant was coming to the struggling shopping district.

“We’re interested,” Arnold said. “But it is not a done deal.”

Ed Bannon, the executive director of the Six Corners Association, said the fact that Chipotle is interested in Six Corners is an indication that the neighborhood is on the upswing.

“We’ve been waiting for that kind of business for some time,” Bannon said.
