CHICAGO — At least eight people were killed and more than two dozen injured as violence erupted across the city over the weekend, police said.

A 30-year-old man from Springfield, identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as William Lee Martin, died after he was shot in the 4200 block of South Wells Street in Fuller Park Friday night, authorities said. Three others were injured in the shooting, according to police.

Timothy E. Kinds, 32, of the 1100 block of East 81st Place, was pronounced dead just before midnight on Friday after being shot multiple times, a medical examiner's office spokesman said. Authorities said the Chatham man, found in the 8200 block of South Dobson Avenue, might have been dead for days.

Aswell Selmon, 46, died at about 10 p.m. after being shot multiple times outside his Uptown residence in the 5000 block of North Winthrop Avenue, authorities said. His neighbors said they didn't think the "laid back" man was the intended target.

Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) sent an email to residents Saturday after Selmon's murder addressing the recent shootings in Uptown and Edgewater. He said the shooting that left Selmon dead and two others wounded was likely gang-related, and that another Friday shooting in the 5200 block of North Winthrop Avenue  was "drug-related." A 23-year-old man was wounded in that incident.

Osterman thanked community members for quickly calling the police.

Englewood man Tremayne Franklin, 33, died after he was shot at a house party in the 6100 block of South Morgan Street on the South Side late Friday night, according to the medical examiner's office. Franklin, of the 7900 block of South Kingston Avenue, was killed after he got into an argument with someone at the party, authorities said.

Marlon L. Vaughn, 33, was stabbed several times in the 1200 block of South Sawyer Avenue just blocks from his home in Lawndale. He was found early Saturday just before 1 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office. Police did not offer a motive for the killing on Saturday.

A south suburban man died of a gunshot wound early Saturday morning, authorities said. Walter K. Pate, 29, of Riverdale, died after being fatally shot in the 200 block of West 37th Street in Armour Park, according to the medical examiner's office.

A 23-year-old Lakeview woman was killed after being shot in Austin Saturday afternoon, the Cook County medical examiner's office said. Shemara Fitzpatrick, of the 1100 block of West Race Avenue, was shot in the 4800 block of West Fulton Street along with another man, authorities said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where police said he was in good condition.

An unknown man in his 50s was shot dead Sunday night in the 6600 block of South Blackstone in Woodlawn, authorities said. Further details were not available early Monday morning.
