Three Cops Seriously Hurt When Car Totaled in S. Side Crash Doing Better

CHICAGO — Three cops in an unmarked car were injured when their car flipped over on the South Side Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Paramedics responded to reports of a crash in the 7000 block South Stony Island Avenue about 11:30 a.m., Chicago Fire Department spokesman Chief Kevin MacGregor said.

The officers, members of the gang unit who were responding to a report of shots fired, swerved to avoid another car and slammed into two light poles, said Police News Affairs spokeswoman Melissa Stratton.

Officers Brian McVey, 35, and D'Wayne McGee, 36, have served for the police department for eight years, Stratton said. Jameka Sherrod, 30, has been on the force for seven years, and was awarded the Police Medal in 2010 when she escaped a suspect holding her at gunpoint.

The three were rushed to the hospital in serious condition — two to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and one to Stroger Hospital, officials said. They were doing better as of Wednesday evening, Stratton said.

"They're all ok — stable condition," she said.
