E-Dogz Food Truck Serves Hard to Find Fare

HYDE PARK — It's the state of the art in street food.

Eric May, an artist participating in the “Ground Floor” show at the Hyde Park Art Center, is dishing up a rotating menu of goodies from noon to 3 p.m. at the E-Dogz food truck in front of the art center.

On the menu for the week of Oct. 8 was the Trinidadian double, two pieces of chickpea bread covered in curry chickpeas. It’s a dish May said he learned about on a trip to Brooklyn, but he couldn't find the dish in Chicago.

“I got everything they had last time,” said Wendy Weathers, who was picking up some hot dogs and Italian beef for herself and her children Oct. 10. “The chili dogs are wonderful.”

May is serving two types of Chicago-style hot dogs.

“There are two different Chicago dogs and a lot of people don’t know that,” May stated. He said the pre-Depression Chicago dog was only dressed with hot peppers, relish, mustard and onion. “That’s how I prefer it.”

E-Dogz is equipped with all the components for the modern Chicago dog, too.

“It’s dragged through the garden — that’s what they say,” May said. “We’ve got all the trimmings. I’ve got my buddy’s special pickles from Central Pickling.”

E-Dogz is in its fourth week and will be serving through Nov. 11.
